Monday, pick up basketball with some hoopers. Felt so great to get out and really run and compete.
Tuesday, Isle of Palms birthday bash with Lou on drums. Such a special night. Family vacation! We learned Every Little Thing She Does is Magic on the fly as well as some U2 and had guest singers from the families, everyone went crazy dancing and hollering! Wow what a party we had! I think I’m getting some video via email in a few days that I’ll share in my Magic Monday YouTube series. Seriously amazing night.
Wednesday, Bees Ferry Apartments poolside. Never felt like I got my mix right, but everyone was complimentary. Had to flash my wedding ring at some older ladies. Pitched my band to play the pool and I think we’re gonna be there Tuesday July 27th 6-8pm!!
Thursday, rocked out with the residents at Benton House Assisted Living on both sides 3-5pm and then hosted another epic open mic night 7-10pm at Southern Roots Park Circle. It was this night that I discovered the mixing difficulties and sound issues with my speakers I’d been having were due to the fact that I was milking every last drop from the 9V in my guitar. Such a relief. I’m not sure how I was getting compliments in recent times, but I’ll take it. Sounded like I was playing tin foil and the bass notes were distorted farts. Maybe the issue wasn’t too prevalent until the last days before the battery swap.
Friday, didn’t have a gig, until a call from Bob on my way to open mic. Gig at The Sanctuary by Loggerheads poolside in Kiawah! Connected super well with the folks sitting nearby with 90s contemporary Christian. Jars of Clay, DC Talk, Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline.. got a guest singer/dancer and $25 tip on Steven Curtis Chapman’s “Dive”. Then a man asked me if he could fly me to Michigan to play for his wife’s 50th. I said sure I’d be up for it. Unfortunately I was booked on the August date they wanted. I’ve got a full weekend of gigs up in Wild Dunes at three of their restaurants, all booked together. “How much would it take to buy you out of Wild Dunes?” Yo, what’s happening right now.
Saturday, AM basketball, then band practice, then on the road to Savannah for Chuck’s birthday at Repeal 33. Tricky parking, made me a little late, ended up getting some help from a cool valet. The party had a magician. His coolest trick was a live rabbit that could find your card. The rabbit would then sign your card by chewing a part of it out. I cranked. I crushed happy birthday, one of the most fun songs ever to sing and play, and made some spontaneous suspenseful and then joyful music to cast the spotlight over to the magician! After the magician, tables were moved and it was time to get the people dancing. I put everything I had into Footloose, requested country songs, Toes, La Bamba, Twist and Shout, etc. There were people waiting poised by the fringes that were wiggling and ready but it just didn’t seem like we could hit that tipping point where everyone would dance together. Every audience is different, and it did seem to me that this group’s energy was a little lower than many others I’ve worked with, but I tried to raise the energy and celebrate the night with every song. I got a fat tip at the end of the night and it was clear everyone enjoyed the music. It was a pretty small group and three of the guests even gave tips digitally via my sign. The craziest part of all was this though.. the STAFF tipped me. $20. I couldn’t believe it. The manager, Sloane, said I did an excellent job and asked for my info for future private party booking referrals. Even before Matt tipped me, I was pretty blown away by the level of service. Genuine desire to serve and attention to detail and extra efforts. A round of applause for the staff at Repeal 33. Wow.
Today, a double header. Indigo Brewing co. noon to 3 and then Meeting Street Lofts 5-7! Top if off with my first kitesurfing lesson of the year tomorrow. I teach Corey tomorrow at 3pm off North Folly by the lighthouse. It’s gonna be blowing!
What a week. Amazing! Not gonna lie though, looking forward to the day off on Tuesday! Have a great week y’all!
